Spain has a problem with workplace absenteeism. According to a report by the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), the number of sick leave cases rose by 60% between 2017 and 2024.
Furthermore, hours not worked due to temporary disability now account for 78.1% of all hours not worked, as shown by the Temporary Disability Study presented last Wednesday by Pimec.
This situation has worsened in recent years and places Spain at the top of the European ranking for absenteeism due to temporary disability, at 6.5% of the working population, well ahead of countries such as France, Italy and Germany.
Against this backdrop, companies are already trying to curb the problem through various means. In the case of one public company, the way to prevent fraud arising from these sick leave claims has been to hire private investigators.
